Los Angeles according to Moira

My LA

Moira, Community Manager

Hi Heartbeat Babes! I'm Moira, my job is to manage this awesome community of ambassadors. This means I do everything from emailing you all campaigns to posting goofy Insta stories and shooting #content on the streets of LA.

I moved here from Texas 5 months ago, so still figuring out the whole "driving in LA without getting stuck in traffic for 2 hours" thing. But through my (mis)adventures, I've stumbled on some of my favorite spots.

griffith

1. Griffith Park

Los Feliz

This is 100% biased because I live just below the park but the Observatory is one of my favorite spots anytime of day in LA. For hiking, working out, or taking a picnic lunch- this park is number one in my eyes!

burro

Burro

Venice Beach

I figured putting all of Abbott Kinney would be cheating in this exercise so I'm only including one store, but you really should walk the whole block. Burro is right across from Salt & Straw and has the cutest selection of books, artwork, home goods and accessories. My favorite thing to buy is greeting cards- I love sending notes to friends and family on quirky cards, but I also like to buy several in a color scheme and use them as art in my room #brokelifehack!

thai food

Night + Market

Silverlake

I just screamed in the office because I discovered Night + Market is opening in Venice while researching this blog post. As American icon Hillary Duff once said, "Hey now, hey now, this is what dreams are made of!" The best Thai food you can get without a trip to Thailand- be ready to wait, especially on a weekend, but the atmosphere is so bright and fun, you won't mind at all!

BePjmOvhAk7_widget.png

El Matador Beach

Malibu

There are so many great beaches in LA, but my personal favorite is Matador in Malibu. Drive up the PCH, park along the street and make your way down the cliffside stairs. You'll be rewarded with gorgeous views, tide pools and rocks for exploring. When you're done with the beach head to Malibu Seafood for the daily catch- it's the perfect Saturday in LA!

fluffy head

Little Fluffy Head

DTLA

Again, a little biased because I went here for a campaign, but I love Boba and this place is the cutest little boba shop. It's right next to the fashion district, and very instagrammable. The staff is so sweet and so are their variety of drinks - especially the famed Cheese Tea! Don't knock it until you've tried it!

Productivity Tips for Female Entrepreneurs

Hi Heartbeat! Kate here- Heartbeat Co-founder and COO!

IMG_0420.jpg

Productivity.

Major Key.

Running a company full time and living a normal human life don't always go hand in hand. Over time (and maybe a little more error than trial) I've picked up some hacks to make the most of your workday! You don't have to run a company to benefit from increased productivity either. Give it a try and let me know your results on Instagram @k8eddie

  1. Find a release - you'll be more productive if you do something that gets out your energy/frustrations every day - yoga, dance, etc. I do a crossword puzzle every day and it calms my brain and makes me more productive throughout the day.
  2. Book time on your own calendar to complete tasks - I book time for things that aren't meetings, like "work on xyz" - that way no one interrupts you.
    1. P.S. you can even book yourself for a little self care time, or set a reminder to drink water- whatever works!
  3. If you need to squeeze in networking, but enjoy your evenings at home-  try to do one coffee meeting before 7:30am each week - a lot of people don't think they have time for networking, but I squeeze it in before work a lot. Or to really double up- I'll do a workout class with people to network with to combine workouts and work.

Thanks for checking out part 2 of our January series, New year, Better me, check back next Friday for a new post from Moira on the key to connections everywhere you go!

New Year, New Heartbeat

With every New Year comes a new barrage of "new year, new me" instas, new people on your favorite treadmill at the gym, and new commitments to whatever combination of diet and exercise will make this the "best year everrrrrr!!"

We're exhausted just thinking about it.

We're doing things a little differently at Heartbeat HQ this year! Our team is taking a stand against "new year, new me" in favor of "new year, better me." Every month we'll focus on one simple change we can make to improve ourselves, our work environment, and our ambassador community- and of course we'll share tips with you every step of the way.

January:

Know Your Values

For the month of January, we challenge you to identify your priorities. Once you have an idea of what to focus on, it becomes so much easier to make those little changes. Don't try to give your entire life a makeover the first month of the year, but find little things you can do every week.

Here's what our team is focusing on this month!

IMG_0025.jpg

"I value my health, so one of my resolutions is to go to Barry's Bootcamp 3x a week" - Marcella, Account Team

IMG_0420.jpg

"I'm trying to watch the sunset every day to insert a little me time into the work week" - Kate, COO

IMG_0146.jpg

"My friends are all over the country now, so my goal is to send a random positive message to someone every day" - Mo, Community Manager

Heartbeat's First Ambassador Referral!!

Hey Heartbeat Ambassadors!

It’s been a little while since we posted on our blog, so luckily this one is extra special! We are beyond excited to announce the FIRST partner campaign referral from one of our very own Heartbeat Ambassadors! Congrats to Gerlie Pototan on referring our new partner Lark Skin Co.! On top of earning her cash rate and getting free products from participating in EIGHT previous campaigns to date, she received an additional $100 for her referral of Lark. Keep up the amazing work, Gerlie, and keep an eye out for the campaign at #hbtlark!

Screen Shot 2017-07-12 at 2.43.33 PM.png

Have some businesses you think might want to partner with us (and earn you $100)? Below are the easy steps to start earning!

1- Identify a brand or company you think would be a great fit for Heartbeat. If you're seeing an Instagram or Facebook ad for them, they probably like you, so always a great place to start!

2- Send them a message (email, LinkedIn message, or DM on Insta or FB work great!). Make sure to mention your HB registered email address.

3- When that brand partner runs their first campaign with us, we'll give you $100!!

Thanks!

The Heartbeat Team

How to Drive Awareness with Instagram

Heartbeat technology enables brands to market their products in a number of ways, but one thing that businesses keep coming back for is driving brand awareness. Whether it's a new product launch or boosting the presence of an existing business, Heartbeat ambassadors are unparalleled at accomplishing massive reach.

So, if you're looking to increase awareness for your brand or product, we can help! Here are a few tips to get started.

1. Strong Content

It's important to have relevant, consistent content on your own Instagram page. You'll want to define a look-and-feel for your page, and build a strategy around how often you post and what types of content you use. Do you use videos or images? Do you always use the same filter? Does photography style matter? Creating content for Instagram can seem time-consuming, and you might not see the payoff right away, but trust us, you will! Instagram can often be the first touchpoint a customer has with your brand, so be sure to use your account wisely. And one more tip: If you do a marketing campaign with Heartbeat, you can use all of the content our incredible ambassadors create for you to populate your own Instagram account. It's like getting hundreds of pieces of great content right away.

2. (The right) Hashtags

Everyone knows that hashtags can help people discover your brand. But what's even more important is using the appropriate hashtags for your industry. If you're a makeup brand, #mua (make-up artist for the uninitiated!) makes completed sense, but don't use this if your business has nothing to do with makeup. Chances are, you won't be reaching the right people anyway. Also, make sure to "bury" your hashtags. Include them in a second post, so they aren't in your main comments. Here's a quick article on how to do that.

3. Posts from Customers

In an ideal world, everyone who loves your product would buy it, go home, and immediately post about how much they love it. But unfortunately, not everyone knows how to do this, and bloggers who love your product might demand exorbitant compensation for doing just that. Heartbeat bridges that gap. With Heartbeat ambassadors, we connect brands directly with real women who genuinely love them, or are excited to discover them, essentially bringing you directly in contact with your biggest brand loyalists. Plus, we make that process easy and worry-free.

Looking to achieve massive reach and engagement? Heartbeat is here to help. Email kate@getheartbeat.co to learn more about working with us as a brand.

Heartbeat Ambassador FAQs

So, how does this work?

We work with brands, products, and companies, who want to use our awesome network to help promote their products. When you sign up to be a Heartbeat ambassador, tell us more about what you'd be interested in posting about on Instagram or other social sites. We'll do our best to send you campaigns from brands you love.

Our partners work with us to connect them to you - real women who genuinely love their products. Authenticity is important to them! Companies work with us to promote their products, fill out surveys, and more, so there are lots of ways you can make some extra money!

If you’re selected for a campaign, you’ll receive an email with all of the details about what to do and how to get paid, so make sure you check your email often and follow all of the instructions closely.

Most campaigns include a simple task like posting about a new product or brand, and include specific hashtags to use and posting guidelines. Once you complete a campaign and submit your post to our system, you'll be paid within 3-5 days according to the payment preferences in your profile. Yes, we pay you real money to post, and yes, this is real!

This seems too easy -- is this fake?

I get paid to just post on IG and Snap? Yup! We’re a company who believes all people should be rewarded like celebrities for posting about things they love. We believe that YOU have just as much influence as any blogger or “influencer,” regardless of how many followers you have. You can check us out on LinkedIn, or anywhere else for more details. Thanks for helping make it a possibility!

How do I get started?

Get started by signing up to be an ambassador on the “Join Us” page. You have to sign up using your Instagram account. This is just like signing up with one-click Facebook login, but we use Instagram instead. We do not access your password at all. You will then be asked for an email address and Facebook. You don’t need Facebook to sign up, but you’ll likely get more offers if you include it. It’s ok if you don’t have a Facebook account at all! Then make sure to complete the interests and payment preferences information in your profile, and we’ll send you an email with next steps and when we have a campaign for you!

How much do I get paid?

During our sign-up process you will receive an email with your average payout rate. It takes about an hour to receive that first email, so be patient! And make sure emails from stephanie@getheartbeat.co aren’t going to your spam folder. Every campaign is different, so there might be payout updates, but there will always be clear dollar amounts or rewards in the description of the campaign. There are also ways to increase your pay rate, like inviting friends to join Heartbeat. We’ll send you details about how these programs work over email too.

How do you calculate how much I get paid? Do more followers matter?

We have a formula that we use, but it’s more than just followers! In fact, we work with ambassadors of all sizes, so even if you only have 300 followers, sign up! Just remember that authentic followers and likes matter MORE than the number of followers, so it doesn’t help if you buy fake likes or followers. We’ll be able to tell! We do not work with people who buy followers. So just be yourself and you’ll get more campaigns! And we’ll actually help you increase your number of followers naturally over time too.

How long will it take me to get paid? What if I haven’t been paid yet?

Your post must be live on your Instagram for 72 hours. You must also submit your post correctly to our system in order for us to track and pay you - this usually means submitting it through the email you received with campaign instructions. We typically pay you within 3-5 business days after the 72 hour time period, as long as your profile is updated with your Paypal or Venmo details. Make sure that payment information (including your email) is up to date by logging into your account and looking under "Payment Preferences." If you haven't received payment after 7 days, please reach out and we'll make it right.

I don’t have Paypal or Venmo, can I still participate?

You can always participate, but we can't pay you unless you have one of these payment systems. We use PayPal and Venmo to make payments easy and accurate. If you don't have one of those accounts, it's free to sign up! Make sure to add your payment information to your profile! We're looking into more methods of payment, but for now, it's just PayPal and Venmo.

Is it ok if my Instagram account is Private?

Yes! We work with many people who have private accounts. To sign up with us, you have to temporarily make your account public, but once you’re signed up, you can make it private again right away, and participate in campaigns just like everyone else!

Is my information secure on Heartbeat? You are asking for my Instagram and PayPal information so I just want to be sure.

Yes! Heartbeat never shares or send your information with anyone without your expressed consent. Any information you provide will be used to provide you with great offers and to get you paid quickly after you complete your offer. All campaigns are opt-in, and we'll never ask you to participate in a campaign you don't want to.

I signed up, what happens next?

Now that you have signed up to be an ambassador, it takes up to 24 hours to receive an email from us, which will have information about your payment rate and how to get started with your first campaign. All of the details and directions will be in that email, so if you haven't received it yet, make sure to check your spam folder and make sure you're receiving emails from stephanie@getheartbeat.co

I haven’t received any offers or campaigns yet, what’s up?

If it were up to us, you'd get an offer every day, but our partners give us guidelines on what they are looking for and then we email those who match. This could be location, amount of followers, interests, etc. That is why it is so important to make sure you have identified all of your interests on your profile!

Additionally, if you haven’t received an offer, please check and make sure everything is up-to-date on your profile. If your profile lists your engagement as 0%, something is wrong! Email jim@getheartbeat.co explaining what’s up and we’ll make that change. We need to be able to read your engagement rate in order to make you offers. If your account is private, that’s ok, but you need to give us access temporarily so we can see your engagement rate, then you can make it private again right away.

I never received the first email after signing up? What do I do?

It takes about an hour to receive your first email, and the email will come from stephanie@getheartbeat.co. Make sure the emails aren't going to your spam folder, and make sure you’re checking the email address that you entered when you signed up. If you haven't received an email, and you can confirm it’s not in your spam folder, we can re-send it for you.  Please email blaise@getheartbeat.co and request to have the Welcome email re-sent to your email.

Do I have to participate in every campaign?

No! We want your posts to be authentic, so if you don't want to participate in a campaign, you can skip it! But after you’ve opted in and been selected to participate, and have said you’ll do it, please do! Especially if we’re mailing you products, we need to make sure you do what you say you will, so just be true to your word and you’ll be all set.

Can I refer friends who would also be great ambassadors?

Yes, thank you! We actually reward you for each friend you refer. After you sign up, we'll send an email the next day with instructions and your own personal referral link so we can track who you referred. Be sure to use this link when you refer friends so we can track it! The more people you refer, the more your payout rate will increase over time.

Can I refer brands?

We’d love that! If you have favorite brands, please let them know about Heartbeat. You can message them on Facebook or Instagram, or if you know the person in charge of marketing, that’s your best bet! You can say something like this:

Hi [Brand]! I’m an ambassador with Heartbeat (getheartbeat.co), a network of female millennial ambassadors on Instagram and Snapchat! I’d love to promote your brand - you should work with them! Email kate@getheartbeat.co to learn more!”

Is there a place where I can see all of the active campaigns?

We don't yet have a place to see your status, but we are working to build that tool for our ambassadors soon! If you have specific questions, we're happy to help answer in the meantime.

Where can I find my offers?

We will send you offers via email, so make sure to check your email inbox often! Make sure your interests in your profile are up to date so we know what you'd like to post about.

How do I change my name or email address in my profile?

To change your email address or name, log in to your profile and simply click on your name or email.

I accidentally signed up using the wrong Facebook account - how do I change this in my profile?

When you’re logged into your profile, you’ll see that your Facebook is connect. There’s a little box where you can “unlink” it. Click this, and re-log in with the correct account.

What’s the “bio link” for? How does it work?

The bio link is super important! This little link makes sure you get credit for all the campaigns you participate in with Heartbeat. By placing it in your bio you give your friends and fans an easy way to click through to the related brand of the campaign you are participating in, and you’ll get the credit for those clicks! If you’re not participating in a campaign, then the bio link will direct people to the Ambassador sign-up page. Anyone who signs up through your link you’ll get the credit for and an extra $0.50 for all your paid posts with Heartbeat for every user that signs up with your link.

Is this just for women?

Men are welcome to sign up and participate. Most of our offers are geared toward women, but you can absolutely sign up. We should have more offers relevant to men in the future.

What It's Like to Be a Heartbeat Ambassador

So you want to be a Heartbeat ambassador but don't know where to begin? Here's a quick debrief on everything you need to know!

How does this work exactly?

We work with brands, products, and companies, who want to use our awesome network to help promote their products. When you sign up to be a Heartbeat ambassador, tell us more about what you'd be interested in posting about on Instagram or other social sites. We'll do our best to send you campaigns from brands you love. After you sign up, you'll get an email with all of the details about what to do, so make sure to check your email often and keep your interests up to date.

Most campaigns include a simple task like posting about a new product or brand, and include specific hashtags to use and posting guidelines. Once you complete a campaign and submit your post to our system, you'll be paid within 3-5 days according to the payment preferences in your profile.

Is this legit?

We know, it sounds too good to be true! But we're entirely real - just ask the thousands of people we have paid! We’re a company who believes all people should be rewarded like celebrities for posting about things they love. Because why should Kylie Jenner get to make all of the money??We are a funded technology startup who is passionate about building tools to help empower real women. You can check us out on LinkedIn, or anywhere else for more details. You can even follow our co-founder @k8eddie so you know we're real people! Thanks for helping make it a possibility!

I Signed up. What's Next?

You'll receive an email from stephanie@getheartbeat.co as soon as we have an offer ready for you! Make sure the emails aren't going to your spam folder. It takes about an hour to receive your first email. Those emails will have all of the details for the current campaigns we have running, and you can decide whether or not you want to participate.

Do I have to participate in every campaign?

Absolutely not! Our goal is to get you a bunch of campaigns you're actually excited about, but if you want to pass on any of them, that's 100% ok! We're here to reward you and help you - there are never any penalties for not participating. Let us know what you're interested in in your profile so we can do our best to get you the offers you love!

How Do I Actually Get Paid?

Your post must be live on your Instagram for 72 hours. You must also submit your post correctly to our system in order for us to track and pay you. Be sure to re-read the campaign emails to make sure you've followed all of the steps. We typically pay you within 3-5 days after the 72 hour time period, as long as your profile is updated with your Paypal or Venmo details. Make sure that payment information (including your email) is up to date by logging into your account and looking under "Payment Preferences." If you have't received payment after 7 days, please reach out and we'll make it right.

Hope that's a great intro into what it's like to be an ambassador! If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us at info@getheartbeat.co

This Christmas (Is All About Influence)

It's the time of year when the holidays begin to take over our everyday existence. From nonstop carols in every aisle to candy cane versions of just about everything (candycane toothbrush, really?), there's no question that the holiday season is all about consumers and commerce. But that isn't new. The holiday shopping season has long been the time when brands spend more money to get you to spend your hard-earned dough. In fact, about 20% of all retail sales come from this one month time period, so advertisers spend more on TV ads and more on things like Black Friday deals to capture your attention during this pivotal time.

But this year, advertisers are doing much more than just running commercials and mailing you flyers - they are focusing on influencers. Focus on influencer marketing has increased immensely in the past few years, and statistics abound:

- 90% of people believe online reviews are more convincing than an in-store salesperson

- 92% of people trust recommendations from other people, even those they don't know, over branded content

- 67% of shoppers purchased a gift they found on social media

On Instagram, having user-generated content, such as that by a blogger or an influencer, means that a consumer is 6.4x more likely to purchase an apparel/fashion product than if there was just branded content. Similar number exist for other verticals, and brands are starting to catch on that Instagram is more than just a photo-sharing site.

The influence of Instagram users, especially during the holidays, is now indisputable. But what that means is that your feed is about to be inundated with influencer "ads." Brands will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to these content entrepreneurs, just to have their massive audiences hit that "like" button. But with more ad posts, their audiences become more and more "post blind." Audiences start to ignore the celebrity ads, and focus more on their friends.

That's why Heartbeat makes sense - when your friend posts about something they actually like, it's not an ad. It's an endorsement from someone you know and trust, and it serves exactly the same purpose as an influencer post, without all of the baggage.

Why Instagram Is A Great Place for Moms

When we started at Heartbeat, we focused on "millennials." What we came to discover was that the term "millennials" refers to so many different types of people. There isn't one "millennial," and that's a fact we absolutely love.

One thing we've noticed is that, more and more, Instagram is becoming a place for moms to share their personal lives and identities. What used to just be the realm of Facebook has now migrated onto other platforms - even Snapchat - and moms are embracing social media like never before.

And it's not just about posting photos of their children. Millennial moms are strong and creative, and many make money as bloggers. Even those who don't blog are looking for ways to showcase their talents, and so Instagram becomes the natural next step.

This means that we're now able to pay and reward moms to post on Instagram. We're essentially paying them to post about things they already genuinely love, and we're so proud to do it. For years, moms have been marketed to by huge brands, but those brands never asked moms for their opinions or help. Heartbeat can actually reach out directly to moms and engage in real conversations with them. Thanks to all of our Heartbeat moms out there! We're excited to be bringing you more campaigns soon.

How to Get Better at Instagram

Is Instagram a skill? Well, technically, maybe not. It's pretty simple to take photos and post them on your profile - just about anyone can do that. But those who use Instagram a lot know that there are definitely ways to improve - to hone your technique - which can result in more likes and also more fun. If you're going to spend time on an app, why not get good at it? Here at Heartbeat, we have lots of data on what makes a post "good." We study how many likes a post receives, what the content looks like, and even what hashtags people use, to determine if a post is "successful." Here are few facts about what we have learned. Hopefully, these can help you too!

1. Be Authentic.

It's incredibly important to be yourself on social media. It might seem like everyone out there is living a life that's more exciting than yours, but we've found that the best posts are the ones that are the real representations of who YOU are. So if you're not jet-setting around the globe or eating at the best restaurants every night, that's ok! The Instagrammers who really get the best engagements (likes, posts, comments) are the ones with real friends, and your real friends want to you what you are really up to, not some glamorous lie.

2. Think About The Background

You do not have to be a great photographer to be great at Instagram, but there are a few small tricks you can use that can make your posts look absolutely professional. One easy one is to just think about what your background is. Heartbeat finds that photos with textured backgrounds, instead of boring white walls, get better engagement overall. That means that taking a photo in front of your house outside, or a cool-looking fence, or some beautiful flowers, can all improve the quality of your post. Most people are thinking about whether they look good, but keep the background in mind, and your posts will improve immensely.

3. Post regularly and consistently

The best way to establish yourself as a content creator is to create consistently. You have to post at least every few days. And when you post, be sure to post images of similar things - have a "theme." Do you like to post about your family or your pet? Just photos of yourself? Having consistency in subject matter can also be helpful in establishing your personal brand. Once you get in the swing of things, this will come more easily to you.

With these few tips, you should be better in no time!

6 Easy Ways Women Can Make Extra Cash to Pay for those Holiday Bills

As the proud driver of a two-door Fiat and the renter of a tiny apartment, I know firsthand we can’t all drive for Uber and rent our places out on Airbnb to make extra cash. But as the holidays and the bills that come with them quickly approach, we’re all thinking more and more about how we’re going to afford those presents. If you’re wondering how it’s going to all come together, here are a few ideas for getting your side hustle on (without too much work at all):

1. Sell your old clothes to someone who will actually wear them

Sites like Tradesy and ThredUp allow you to sell your old clothes for money. You just take photos of your clothes and post them, taking the consignment shop concept to the next level, and actually making it worth your time. If you have nicer clothes that are in good condition, you can make quite the pretty penny, perhaps even enough to cover those holiday expenses. Some of these sites even cover shipping, so you don’t have to stress about the details. Just be sure not to get lost looking through all of the awesome clothes they have.

2. Pretend you're an all-star coupon-er

If you’re not using Honey yet, you are literally missing out on free money. You install Honey right into your browser, and it automatically finds coupon codes for things you’re already buying. So as you’re going through online checkout on any website, it saves you money right then and there, and there’s really nothing you have to do. It sort of feels like you’re beating the system, and pretty soon, you’ll forget you ever lived without it.

3. Get paid to post on Instagram

We recently discovered Heartbeat, which is a company that pays real women for posting about brands and products they love on their social media accounts. You know how Kylie Jenner posts about products like FitTea? Well, now you can do that too, even if you just have 300 Instagram followers, not 300,000. Heartbeat rewards its ambassadors (they call them BAEs - Brand Ambassadors Extraordinaire!) with either cash or products, and it can be a really fun way to actually use social media for good.

4. Get paid to lose weight

Whoa - did you know you can get paid for working out? Apps like HealthyWage and DietBet actually pay you to set goals for exercise and keep them - it’s the keeping them that’s that challenge of course! Studies have shown that incentivizing people with money can actually help them achieve their fitness goals, so if you’re looking to make some cash and keep the holiday sweets in check, this might be the way to go.

5. Be a full-time part-timers

Fiverr pays you $5 to accomplish small tasks. It’s a lot of work that other people don’t want to it, like boring data entry, but those small projects can really add up. You’re technically benefitting from other people’s laziness, so grab those odd jobs and bring in that extra cash.

6. Be a Mystery Shopper

Yes, this really exists. Sign up with Marketforce and Best Mark to become a registered mystery shopper. Stores and brands want to know what the consumer experience is really like, and luckily enough, you’re a consumer! All you have to do is visit retail stores and give details about what happened, how the store representatives treated you, and more.

It turns out there are plenty of simple ways to make money on the side, and you don’t have to rearrange your entire life to make it happen. Take it from this hustler, those holiday presents will feel even better than normal when you know you practically got them for free. Happy savings!

Influencer Marketing Has Evolved (and it will again)

Influencer marketing is a natural extension of celebrity culture. From the early days of Hollywood, people have looked to “stars” for cultural influence — how to dress, how to behave in good society, how to live a luxury lifestyle. This culture of the “star” continued through the 20th century, and even when social media entered the picture, the definition of a “star” was hardly disrupted. But as social media became more mainstream, the idea of cultural influence evolved. More people were given a voice — whether it was through videos on YouTube or just an occasional tweet — there was a shift in power between authority and the people. Brands, governments, and publishers were all forced to listen to real people. It became a two-way conversation.

At the dawn of the social media age, in the early 2000s, there were people early on who identified the channel as a way to make money. Or saw it as a way to express a point of view. These were the first “influencers.” Social media was increasingly a method for becoming famous and making money, and people began to catch on. Bloggers began building brands. Traffic started consolidating on a few key platforms — YouTube, Facebook, and later Instagram. And many factors converged to set the stage for a “perfect storm” of influencers, including increased penetration of smartphone adoption, the downfall of the traditional photography industry, and a new emphasis on millennial personal empowerment.

Over time, the influencer economy began to take over. More and more, it is evident that there are now three categories in the scale of celebrity — actual celebrities, the “internet famous” — bloggers and influencers — and real people. If you think about it, influencers are just like the old Hollywood celebrities who sold soap on the radio — they are using their name to endorse products. Nothing has changed. And we’re celebrating all that is fake. From fake lips to fake boobs, by celebrating the Kylie Jenners of the world we’re setting up a dangerous paradigm for millennials — focusing on standards they simply cannot meet and simply should not want to.

People are beginning to realize the failure of the “influencer” economy. Engagement rates are incredibly low, typically less than 1% of followers, and brands aren’t able to achieve real ROI. At the end of the day, influencers are no better than digital infomercials. Instead of Chuck Norris, brands use the Chiarra Ferrigni. The cracks in the industry are starting to show, as big brands look for more value and more return on this channel, and simply aren’t seeing it.

That’s why at Heartbeat we see the next evolution happening. We need to focus on a social media economy that is more authentic, and also helps brands drive results. Heartbeat focuses on real women as ambassadors, not “influencers,” because real women have real-life influence. We match our 45,000 ambassadors with brands who are trying to reach millennials, and we pay them a small amount to post about brands they already love — content is genuine, and because our ambassadors aren’t “professionals,” their endorsements are real. They don’t have fake followers and they don’t have fake intentions. Our goal is to give real women a voice in marketing every single day.
